Get Involved
We encourage you to join the Speak for Children campaign!
There are many ways you, your family, friends and neighbours can have a direct impact on the provincial election campaign.
Here are a few ideas:
Contact your candidate
Most candidates will try and reach voters through door-to-door canvassing. But why wait for them to reach you?
Most election campaigns will have several all-candidates meetings (usually publicized in local papers or on candidate websites) which provide a forum for individuals to ask questions of all the candidates in a “town hall” debate format. This is a great opportunity to ask the candidates their views on public education and support for the Speak for Children campaign priorities and to compare their answers. You can also usually follow up with the candidate or a member of their campaign team after the meeting.
In addition, many candidates make time during the campaign to meet with voters at their offices or talk to them on the phone about local issues. You can take this opportunity by calling your local candidates’ campaign offices and asking for a brief meeting or phone call with the candidate. Local candidate contact information will be available on the Elections Ontario or political party websites.
Show you care
Download this checklist to ask your local candidates to commit to a pro-public education and pro-children agenda! Ask your candidates if they will support the Speak for Children campaign’s four priorities:
- Maintain investment in public education to maximize our potential for growth; resist cutting or overhauling a system that continues to improve.
- Proceed with the implementation of the full-day Kindergarten program, delivered by certified teachers, to fully realize its short and longer-term economic benefits.
- Continue to implement the recommendations of the Safe Schools Action Team; including embedding anti-bullying strategies into the school curriculum and providing more anti-bullying training for students, teachers and parents.
- Follow through with the Social Assistance Review and continue to implement a poverty reduction strategy, particularly with the goal of eliminating child poverty.
